Flamengo has been on cloud nine in recent years. After cleaning up the house, the club won two Brazilians, a Libertadores and runner-up in the club world.

Now, they have the chance to conquer South America again in a short space of time with the Libertadores 2022 final against Athlético Paranaense on October 29th, in Ecuador.

But what does Rio's red-black team need to do to avoid a new runner-up and tie with São Paulo, Palmeiras, Santos and Grêmio as three-time champions of America? Let's talk in this article.

The mistakes have already been exposed as well as the squad's flaws, with the new coach the team seems to be in a great direction, let's review a little about the ghost that haunted the crow's nest.

The ghost of Montevideo

The Flamengo team, whenever it reached the Copa Libertadores finals, ended up as champions. It happened for the first time in 1981, with the team led by the club's biggest idol, Zico.

After 38 years, the red and black team returned to the decision in 2019, now playing a single game in Lima against River Plate.

The victory came with drama, just in the last five minutes, with two goals from Gabigol and the double for the Gávea team.

In 2021, he was the main favorite against Palmeiras, having had the best campaign, racking up goals after goals against his opponents.

On the other hand, Palmeiras qualified with suffering, struggling in the semi-finals against Atlético Mineiro and going to the final due to the away goal and with football that didn't excite many people.

In the game in Montevideo, the expectation was that the Flamengo fans would leave Uruguay with Tri, but they had to watch the Alviverde celebrate their third championship after the game went into extra time.

Even though they were behind on the scoreboard, they put pressure on Palmeiras and had a draw with Gabigol. But it was a mistake by Andreas Pereira, who made a mistake in his own field, and Deyverson scored the title-winning goal.

The following year, the grand final of America's main tournament returns, being the third final in four years. What should be avoided so that Montevideo does not happen again?

Where Flamengo can't go wrong

The challenge has been launched and the mission is not that simple. Here are some reasons for this statement.

  1. Underestimating Atlético Paranaense. The team excelled during the competition and advanced when they were not favorites. It was like that against Estudiantes and Palmeiras.
  2. The Felipão factor. The gaucho has already won the main title in the Americas twice and wants to close with a flourish, as he has signaled that he may stop at the end of the year, with the Tri da América.
  3. Guayaquil. Even though it is in a neutral stadium and with the majority of fans in favor, the fact of playing at altitude can compromise the team that plays with the exchange of passes and speed.

A very important factor to consider is retaining your own fans. Much of last year's decline is attributed to the pride of the team and its fans.

Indeed, many have already traveled to the Uruguayan capital believing that the Libertadores was already guaranteed, a thought that even passed on to some players.

The objective is to prevent this excitement from being reflected on the field and preventing the title from being won after 90 minutes of the final.

Finally, the expectation is that the cry of sadness of 2021 will turn into a cry of joy and happiness in 2022. But to conquer America again, Flamengo needs to justify its favoritism.

All the emotions of the final

Are you looking forward to the Libertadores 2022 grand final? On one side, Flamengo, two-time champion, one of the best teams in all of South America.

On the other side, Athlético Paranaense, who overcame several opponents, including Palmeiras, considered favorite at the time to seek the tri consecutively.

Two coaches with history. Dorival Júnior, Brazilian Cup champion with Santos, who does a great job in the red and black team and could win the biggest title in his career and qualify to replace Tite in the Brazilian team post-World Cup.

Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has two American victories on his resume, in addition to the Brazilian championship, Copa do Brasil and is the last world champion with the Brazilian team.

The expectation is for a great game and excitement until the end. Therefore, the fans are prepared not to miss any part of this game.
