After a few lackluster seasons in Madrid, João Félix seeks new opportunities at Chelsea

After shining in spells at Benfica and Atlético de Madrid, João Félix has earned a reputation as one of the most talented players in Europe and now has a second chance to shine at Chelsea.

See what were the reasons that led Cristiano Ronaldo to accept the signing of Al-Nassr, ceasing to compete in Europe.
The player lost some of his shine, and after problems with the Atlético de Madrid coach, he looked for new opportunities to recover his football.
Check out our article below, all the details that led to the player leaving the Spanish club, and what to expect from the player's time at the Blues.
The Rapid Rise of João Félix
The Portuguese is without a doubt one of the most promising players of this new generation of stars.
When he was signed by Atlético de Madrid, he was compared to Mbappé and Haaland, however, he lost a little space playing for the Spanish club.
Firstly, the player seeks to find himself at Chelsea with this change, and have good seasons again.
João Félix started his career playing for the B team of the Benfica team, with good performances, he was soon placed to play for the main team.
Already playing for Benfica, in series A of the Portuguese championship, he was a fundamental player in winning the title.
This season, the player scored 20 goals and provided nine assists in just 43 matches, which caught the attention of major European clubs.
Atlético de Madrid managed to sign him, paying a large sum and betting heavily on the star's success.
Arrival in Madrid
The player was Atlético de Madrid's most expensive signing, and at that time, the fourth most expensive in the world.
The value involved in transferring the player from Benfica to Madrid was approximately 126 million euros.
The club's expectations for the player were very high, due to the value involved in the transfer.
However, the player did not play spectacular games and campaigns as expected.
He played good games, managed to score important goals, but it wasn't even remotely what the club expected with his signing.
But the boy was only 19 years old, so he still had a lot of room to improve, he didn't prove to be a big problem for the club.
Since being hired, the player had been having good games, in the 20/21 season, he was an important player in winning the Spanish league.
To date, the player has the following numbers for the current club:
- 131 matches
- 34 goals
- 18 assists
- 1 title won
For the amount paid, much more was expected from the player, but there are many other issues involved in his bad phase, including a major controversy involving coach Diego Simeone, see the details below.
Problems with Simeone
One of the reasons for the loan was João Félix's relationship with coach Diego Simeone, which is not the best, the atmosphere became so bad that the player asked to transfer from the club.
The last straw was the coach's decision to leave the player on the bench against Brugge, in the Champions League, a match in which the Spanish club was eliminated from the competition.
But this was just one of the consequences of the relationship between the two, according to journalists, the beginning of the friction was precisely in the only season in which João Félix managed to win a title with Atlético.
The player would have “sacrificed” and played six months injured, so as not to be absent from the team, but he did not receive recognition from the coach.
After the title, the player played fewer and fewer games for the club, at the coach's option.
Even with the player requesting his transfer, his contract with the club runs until 2027, and the release clause is worth 350 million euros.
At the moment, he remains linked to Atlético, the option was to put the player on loan.
João Félix gets a second chance to shine
After all the conflict and problems at Atlético, the player receives a breather, a new chance to show his football.
The boy, despite his bad phase at the Spanish club, continued to perform well for the Portugal team, including in the 2022 World Cup.
Despite being eliminated in the quarter-finals, João Félix performed well for his team in the competition, with one goal and two assists in four games.
So maybe the problem isn't exactly the player, but rather a tactical issue.
Simeone's Atlético de Madrid is known for its “retranca”, where it prioritizes a defensive tactical formation.
In other words, the coach gives up a large part of the attack, to have a solid defense.
In the national team, João Félix finds a totally different scenario, with more teammates in attack, he is able to impose his offensive qualities.
Upon arrival at Chelsea, the player will find a much more balanced team than Atlético de Madrid.
In this new team, with many other stars to share the spotlight, the player will look for his good football again.
Chelsea situation
The English team faces major offensive problems, with big signings like Aubameyang not producing good results, the Blues are looking for a solution.
Furthermore, the club suffers from a lot of bad luck, check out the list of Chelsea's injured players:
- N'Golo Kanté
- Ben Chilwell
- Ruben Loftus-Cheek)
- Edouard Mendy
- Armando Broja
- Wesley Fofana
- Reece James
- Mason Mount
- Raheem Sterling
- Christian Pulisic
And finally, big signings made to solve offensive problems, such as Lukaku and Aubameyang, have not been performing well.
Chelsea hopes that with the signing of João Félix, and the return of injured players, the team will return to good results.
The Portuguese player, if he manages to recover his good football, could take off in this team.
He has the characteristics of great creativity when exchanging passes, and good finishing.
Playing alongside stars like Ziyech, Mason Mount and company, he has everything to form a killer attack.
What is the future of João Félix
The athlete was loaned to Chelsea until the end of next season, with no buyout clause at the end of the contract.
The Spanish team hopes that by the time João Félix returns, they will have resolved their issue with coach Simeone, who only has a contract until 2024.
Then the player will return to Spain, but depending on his campaign for Chelsea, the tide could change.
