The path to victory
The plot built up to Messi's conquest by Argentina, if it were written, would not be so exciting.
Lionel, since his debut for Barcelona, has been seen as a world prodigy, and over the years, the player has racked up titles and broken records.
However, in competitions for Argentina, the player always had a lot of problems achieving big victories.
Furthermore, Messi, due to frustrating defeats for the national team, even said that he would retire from the national team a few times.
Check out some of the player's stumbles until his redemption in the 2022 World Cup.
Failures in the Copa América
After the World Cup, perhaps the most important title for a South American team is the Copa América.
However, Messi's Argentina also had many difficulties in winning this title in the number 10's generation.
Lionel Messi, still a boy, had his first chance to win this cup in 2007, when he reached the final, however, he faced Brazil and ended up losing.
At that time, he was already a great player, but he was not yet the reference for that team.
A few years later came the player's most frustrating series of defeats for his national team.
In 2015, Argentina reached the final of the competition again, this time against Chile.
Messi would once again have the chance to win a title with his national team, now he was the team's idol, so the weight of the achievement was on his shoulders.
Once again the player saw the title slip from his hands, Argentina lost 4-1 on penalties.
The only Argentine player to convert his shot was Messi.
The following year, the same final was repeated with the same results.
In the end the game ended in a draw and the decision went to penalties again, but this time, Messi isolated his penalty, and Chile won for the second time over Argentina.
The number 10 ended up announcing his retirement from the national team after the frustrating defeat, but ended up giving up on the idea some time later.
The remarkable defeats in the World Cups
The first World Cup that Messi was eliminated with Argentina was in 2006, but at that time the player was not the team's reference.
In 2010, the player's first major frustration at the World Cup, losing to Germany.
However, the real big blow was in 2014, when the player was at one of his greatest peaks, and was able to compete in the World Cup as the best player in the world, with four Golden Balls under his belt.
Argentina reached the final in a great campaign to compete against Germany, who had defeated Brazil 7-1.
The German squad had players like Klose, Muller, Neuer, Philipp Lahm and several other stars.
On Argentina's side, the biggest name of the team was Messi alone.
The final was a warm game, but with Germany dominating possession.
One of the clearest scoring chances was precisely from Messi, who almost scored the goal that could have guaranteed the World Cup.
The game went into extra time, where Mario Gotze scored the winning goal and secured the fourth for the Germans.
Messi had yet another tough defeat in this competition, before winning the title.
In 2018, the Albiceleste team was well packed, this time Messi had big names at his side, such as Di Maria and Aguero.
The Argentine team was defeated in the round of 16 by France, in a hard-fought game, a 4 x 3 comeback for the French, who soon became that year's champions.
This defeat put Messi in a corner, the player, who was already considered the greatest player in the world, would only have one more chance to be World Cup champion.
The confrontation with the clockwork orange and revenge
One of Messi's biggest obstacles in winning the World Cup was the clash against the Netherlands, where much more than football was at stake.
His opponent's coach, Van Gaal, has long had a feud with Argentine players, which is one of the main reasons for Messi's behavior, who took revenge for his idols.
Starting with the coach's problem with Riquelme at Barcelona, a former Albiceleste player.
When Riquelme arrived at the club, after a great season, the Dutch coach was against his signing and did not let the player shine.
He put him in play on very few occasions, and always out of his position. Soon the player was sold to Villarreal.
Di María also had Van Gaal as a coach, and described him as “the worst coach he has ever worked with”.
The coach never had good relations with South American players, Dí Maria, Rivaldo, Riquelme, none of the big stars did well under his command.
And in the confrontation, Messi, when he scored the goal against the Netherlands, made a point of celebrating like a riquelme, making a gesture of his ears with his hands, looking directly at Van Gaal, in a gesture of revenge and protest.
Argentina's third championship at the feet of Messi
The player's campaign in this World Cup was simply one of the greatest performances in the history of the competition.
Not just for goals or assists, but for the way a player influenced his entire team.
The calm athlete, who played coolly, let his emotions speak louder, and enchanted everyone with the football he presented.
The desire with which Messi was playing was visible, each move seemed to be the last of his life.
It's no wonder he was awarded the best player in the World Cup.
Rising to the next level
With winning the World Cup, Messi can now be placed on the shelf alongside the great idols who won this competition.
Not that Messi wasn't already a football genius, but with winning the title, he was elevated to another level, and he was even compared to Pelé.
Messi and Maradona
Being one of Argentina's greatest idols, Messi was always compared to Maradona, however, Diego Maradona had a World Cup, and with that Argentina's current number 10 was left behind.
Now, with the cup in his hands, Messi equals himself, and places himself as the new god of football in Argentina.
When winning the title, Messi also dedicated the title to Maradona. who died in 2020.
It wasn't with a goal from the hand of God, but with the genius of one. Messi didn't take revenge for a war, but he silenced those who disbelieved Argentina and showed the world that South American football is more alive than ever.
