  • Belgium 0 x 0 Croatia.
  • Canada 1 x 2 Morocco.
  • Japan 2 x 1 Spain.
  • Costa Rica 2 x 4 Germany.

We had a few more teams qualifying for the next phases, and others who will catch an early plane home.

The great teams from Germany and Belgium had their eliminations declared today, in addition, some surprises also happened, and it is possible that it was one of the days with the biggest upset of all the World Cups.

The Japanese team qualified first in a group with champions Germany and Spain.

Morocco left behind the finalist and third place in the last World Cup, and ended up leading its group.

At one point during the day, Costa Rica was beating Germany 2-1, and with that result, they eliminated Germany together with Spain and qualified for the next phase.

However, the dream was short-lived, as the Germans soon scored two goals, leaving only Spain and Japan to qualify.

But see below the complete details of each match:

Belgium x Croatia

Overview:

Belgium needed to seek victory, the only result that mattered. The brilliant “Belgian generation” had some problems in the first games, and now they needed to beat the 2018 World Cup finalist.

Croatia had a good run in the first games, and was playing for a draw.

First time

In the first minute of the game, Perisic scared Courtois with a shot from outside the area, after a rehearsed play.

A few minutes later, Belgium, knowing that they had to get the result, went forward, following a good arrival by Carrasco in the area and almost scored a goal.

Belgium's best approach in this first stage was in a counterattack, Bruyne gave a pass to Mertens to face the goalkeeper, who caught the ball too much and sent it out.

Second time

In the second stage, both teams returned much more offensive, which, consequently, resulted in several goal opportunities for both sides.

The first of them was from Belgium, with Lukaku heading into the hands of the goalkeeper, and the second from Kovacic, who made a beautiful shot, but Cortouis saved it.

It becomes a very different game, that is, one attacks and the other defends, in the next play the roles are reversed.

Close to 60 minutes the game took on a dramatic air, after all, Croatia began to close in more and Belgium tried to score at all costs.

The Belgians, in total, wasted many chances, but striker Lukaku missed two very clear chances to score and came out as the villain of the elimination.

Situation of the teams in their groups:

With this result, Croatia ended up ranking 2nd in the group, behind Morocco.

Belgium, which was second in the ranking of the best FIFA teams, returns home early.

Canada x Morocco

Overview

Morocco, one of the surprises of this World Cup, shows its strength again in the confrontation against the already eliminated Canada team. Game in which even with a draw they would qualify, but they sought victory from the beginning.

The North Americans, even though they were already eliminated, wanted to show their good football!

First time

The Moroccans established their rhythm of play early on. After just four minutes, the Canadian goalkeeper, following a passing error, accidentally passes it to Ziyech, who shoots through cover, where the ball whimsically passes over the goalkeeper and ends up in the back of the goal.

Canada tried to arrive with a cross from the wing, but the player in action was unable to reach the ball to shoot the goal.

A few minutes later, Ziyech, scorer of the first goal, makes a beautiful pass and leaves his teammate En-Nesyri in front of the goal to score.

Second time

In the second stage, the Moroccan team continued to press their rhythm and always reached the opponent's goal, however, these times they were unable to score goals.

Canada arrived a few times, also without effectiveness. The goal came from a cross from Samuel, who threw the ball into the middle of the area, deflected it off the Moroccan defender and went into the goal, making it an own goal.

Situation of the teams in their groups:

Morocco achieved an incredible classification, 1st place, ahead of the Croatian and Belgian teams, after all, with the football they presented on the first day, it was clear why the team reached the World Cup.

Canada came in last and without any victories, but despite this classification, the team showed good football, however, it was unlucky to fall into the group with such strong teams.

Japan x Spain

Overview

Another of the big surprises of this World Cup, Japan surpasses Spain and qualifies first, leaving Germany out.

The Spanish, who started by scoring 7 goals, ended up being second place, moreover, during the game between Costa Rica and Germany, they ran the risk of being left out of the group stage.

First time

A game in which both teams started very offensively, after 10 minutes of play both teams already had their first shots on goal, however, only Spain managed to be effective.

In a cross, Morata rose above everyone and scored the goal, opening the scoring for Spain.

Second time

So far so good, everyone expected Spain to dominate, until with a beautiful shot, Doan sent the ball into the drawer and the goalkeeper was unable to save, and the underdog tied the game.

Two minutes after the first goal, in a play on the right, Japan turned the game around with Tanaka, taking the lead of the group and taking out Germany.

The goal is being questioned, as the ball appears to come out before the cross that precedes the goal. But the judge scored a goal, game over and Japan in the round of 16.

Situation of the teams in their groups:

With this result, Germany would need to beat Costa Rica by a difference of 9 goals, to overtake Spain and qualify, but they failed.

Even though Spain lost, it continues, but with a change of plans, it will now face Morocco.

Great Japan will have to face last year's finalists Croatia, but they have just put two champions behind them. What will they do in the knockout stage?

Costa Rica x Germany

Overview

The 2018 World Cup underdog almost pulled another one over four-time champion Germany.

The Costa Ricans narrowly avoided sending Spain and Germany back home, but ended up suffering an upset. Even so, they played a good game.

First time

Germany started with everything, dominating possession of the ball and having clear chances to score early in the match.

The first goal came in the 10th minute, in a cross from the wing, Gnabry scored for the Germans and took the weight off the shoulders of this team that needed to win to qualify.

The Asians could not win under any circumstances for Germany to qualify, so when they heard about Spain's goal against Japan, the Germans relaxed and began to manage the game.

Second time

The problem happened on the way back, when Japan turned the game around, and with this result Germany would need to beat Costa Rica with a great goal difference, and it was at that moment that psychology took its toll.

It seems that feeling that the Germans had suffered the blow, Costa Rica went forward and achieved, even if for a moment, a historic turnaround.

With Takeda and Vargas, they both score from balls passed after crosses. With this score, Costa Rica even surpassed Spain, and left the 2010 and 2014 champions out of the next phase.

The moment was short-lived, a few minutes later, Havertz equalized, and even turned the game around, avoiding a tragedy.

Germany still scored one more goal with Fullkrug, but now they would need to score more than 6 goals to beat Spain's goal difference to qualify.

Situation of the teams in their groups:

Costa Rica was eliminated, but played good football, going head to head with great teams and, if it weren't for the big initial stumble against Spain, they could have qualified.

The Germans left with a terrible result, after all, for the second year in a row they failed to advance from the group stage.
