Team highlights

This great team has some pieces that stand out among the group.

Firstly, the piece that was the basis of this entire selection, without a doubt, was Amrabat, the first defender, the link between defense and attack.

This player is being tipped to be the best defensive midfielder in the World Cup, playing incredible games, a true driving force for this team.

Always leading the team in attack, and in defense, he was always the first line of combat.

Likewise, another fundamental player was goalkeeper Bouno, who performed impeccably.

Especially in the game against Spain, he was a wall during the match, and when he needed to act on penalties, he took three hits from his opponents, so Morocco only needed to take three penalties.

Now the creation in midfield was with him, Azzedine Ounahi, the slender athlete who moved lightly across the field.

He was the player who broke the opponent's pressure, always finding teammates well positioned to pass the ball.

And finally, the duo Ziyech and Hakimi were the main players in the attack, always with an intense exchange of passes, opening several spaces for their teammates to attack.

These were some of the main highlights of the Morocco team at this World Cup.

Morocco's group stage campaign

The team arrived as an “underdog”, since its group included the great teams from Croatia and Belgium, which were, respectively, first and third placed in the last World Cup.

However, the Moroccan team did not allow themselves to be intimidated by this, and qualified first, surprising everyone.

In their first game, they faced a very complicated team, Croatia, who defeated Brazil in this World Cup, but managed to maintain a draw.

They didn't manage to win the first game, but taking a point against the finalist from the last competition was a great achievement for those who expected nothing from the African team.

The first big victory was against Belgium, again a team that defeated Brazil in a World Cup.

The Moroccans scored a solid 2-0 against the talented Belgian generation, and with that practically declared their classification.

The last game of this phase was another victory, with two early goals achieving first place in the group, making the great Belgium return home early.

Morocco's knockout campaign

Now, with the team qualified for the knockout stages, the games have become even more exciting.

The Moroccans' first challenge was against a strong Spain, who scored the biggest defeat of the World Cup to date, 7 x 0 in Costa Rica.

First step, victory against Spain

However, Morocco was not intimidated by its opponent, it played a very tactical match, defending itself very well and taking everything to penalties.

That's where goalkeeper Bouno shone, saving three of the Spaniards' three shots, leaving it to Hakimi to classify his team with his shot.

The second big step, making history

Nobody believed that the Moroccan team would beat the Portugal team, which had just beaten Switzerland, winning 6-1.

Furthermore, the Portuguese team had stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and João Félix.

However, Morocco had the dream of being among the four best in this competition, and the heart spoke louder than the technique.

Even with not so famous players in the squad, the team managed to score a goal in the first half, and hold off Portugal's star-studded attack.

Placing an African team in the semifinals of a World Cup for the first time.

The stumble against France

With the chance of going to the final in their hands, the Moroccans let their dream slip through their fingers.

Morocco played a great game, but the goal conceded at the beginning of the match, and the physical condition of the players, prevented the Moroccan team from being able to recover the score.

Even with several players injured, or playing with physical problems, the Moroccan team put a lot of pressure on France, had several chances to score, but all of them were stopped by goalkeeper Lloris, who played a great game.

A game worthy of a World Cup semi-final, despite the defeat, the African team put on a great performance, and showed why they got there.

The chance for redemption

As they reached the semis, they will play a match to decide third place against Croatia.

This is the chance for the Moroccan team to go even further than they have managed to achieve, putting their name on the 2022 World Cup podium.
