Unable to maintain a series of victories, and unable to withstand the pressure in decisive games, the São Paulo tricolor fell away from titles this past year.
The team's inconstancy generated several problems for the team throughout the year. Therefore, see São Paulo’s main mistakes.
Again, the tricolor is the “almost” team
In 2022, São Paulo's mistakes consecrate them once again as the “almost” team, as they became known in 2021.
The team demonstrated great inconsistency in the Brazilian Championship, however, it presented a great campaign when it comes to knockout competitions.
Having the chance to win an international title after 12 years of fasting, he let his chances slip through his fingers, as well as other titles in 2021 and 2022.
The titles played in 2022:
Brazilian championship
The São Paulo team had the following performance in the 2022 campaign for the Brasileirão:
- Games: 34.
- Wins: 12.
- Draws: 14.
- Defeats: 8.
- Goals scored: 48.
- Goals conceded: 36.
- Goal difference: 12.
- Use: 49%.
Being a performance well below expectations considering the São Paulo team.
Certainly, the São Paulo team's biggest mistake in this competition was the draws.
For a straight points championship, a large number of draws does not lead to a good position, since by winning just one point, direct opponents are able to accumulate points and shoot up the table.
Furthermore, due to the lack of victories, the tricolor reached 6 points from the relegation zone.
The lack of competitiveness to seek victory ended up leaving the team far from achieving that title.
The 10th place ranking this year did not show many differences to 2021, where the team was in 13th, but when considering the year 2020, in which the team fought directly for the title, it shows a clear decline.
On the other hand, in the knockout competitions, even without winning titles, São Paulo achieved impressive results.
Counting the games of the Campeonato Paulista, Copa do Brasil and Sul Americana, the team from São Paulo recorded nine victories in 10 games, with an advantage of 90%.
Check out São Paulo's campaign in each of the following competitions:
South American Cup
After the campaign not going so well in the Brasileirão, the Copa Sudamericana became São Paulo's main objective in 2022.
The last achievement of an International competition was in 2012, in a very controversial final. In other words, after a 10-year fast, the team's dedication was total.
In 2012, São Paulo defeated several Latin American giants, such as LDU, Universidad de Chile and Tigres. However, in 2022 it fell to Independiente Del Valle.
São Paulo's campaign in 2022 also involved some football giants.
They qualified in a preliminary group stage without much difficulty against the teams Everton (Chile), Ayacucho (Peru) and Jorge Wilstermann (Bolivia).
In the round of 16, they faced the great Universidad Católica de Chile, but won resoundingly.
They faced Ceará at Castelão and won, but this time, with great difficulty, and the two teams went to a penalty shootout, where São Paulo emerged victorious.
The semi-final, unlike the initial stages, was much more difficult, losing 3-1 in the first game at Athletico's home, but in the return match the team from São Paulo managed to draw 2-0 in regular time, and won the Paraná team on penalties.
They arrived excited for the final after two surprising victories, but faced a very solid opponent and lost 2-0 to Independiente del Valle, and even had two players sent off.
Brazil's Cup
With the Brasileirão left aside after São Paulo's mistakes, another competition that became a priority was the Copa do Brasil.
This title would be an unprecedented achievement for coach Rogério Ceni, but the team only reached the semifinals.
They ended up catching Flamengo in a great phase and lost in the first game 3-1, and in the return game they lost 1-0, saying goodbye to another chance at the title in 2022.
Paulista championship
Another title that the tricolor missed was the Campeonato Paulista.
After a good campaign, they ended up facing Palmeiras in the final.
In the first game, at home, they managed to win 3-1, practically en route to victory.
Despite this, in the return game, another mistake by São Paulo appeared and, again, they were unable to withstand the pressure and took a crushing 4-0 at Verdão's home.
With almost three major titles in the year, the São Paulo team spent another year without winning a title.
How São Paulo plans to avoid mistakes in 2023
Something that influenced the team's stumbles during the year was the absence of great players. The absences of defender Arboleda and midfielder Gabriel Sara are some examples.
To ensure that this problem does not occur again, São Paulo is looking for new signings to reinforce the squad.
Some of the names confirmed to help the squad are players Giuliano Galoppo, Marcos Guilherme and goalkeeper Felipe Alves.
Despite these signings, none of them have the characteristics of the classic number 10, which would be a very important piece given the way the São Paulo tricolor plays.
At the current moment, without a midfield with so much creation, the bet is on top scorer Calleri, who even without a connection with the midfield manages to score a lot.
And São Paulo's chances for next year, if it wants to maintain the way it plays, is to invest again in elimination format championships, as it will be able to use its offensiveness, and the inconsistency ends up not generating as many losses in the long term as in the Brazilian championship.
