The battle for the third championship
The two teams have already won the World Cup twice, this final was to decide who would win the trifecta and, therefore, come closer to the best teams in the world.
The Albiceleste team had not won the title since 1986, however, France had just won the title in the 2018 edition.
All of the last four titles were won by European teams:
- Italy – 2006
- Spain – 2010
- Germany – 2014
- France – 2018
With this, establishing superiority in football criteria.
So who would win this duel?
The current champion would take home the second championship and establish dominance over world football, or the powerful Argentina team would break the cycle of European titles.
(Un)fortunately, Argentina won and once again returned to South American football some of its past glory.
Check the Ranking of the teams with the most titles:
- Brazil: 5
- Italy: 4
- Germany: 4

Argentina was tied with Uruguay and France, but has now isolated itself, behind only Brazil, Italy and Germany.
Last World Cup for Messi, and just a start for Mbappe
The game had several duels between attackers and defenders, however, the most interesting confrontation was the battle between Messi and Mbappe.
Both are teammates at Paris Saint Germain, but when it comes to the World Cup, it's a different story.
Friends, friends, business aside, this summed up the confrontation between the two stars, who exchanged light provocations during the game.
Which made the match even more intense, on the one hand, the chance for one of football's greatest geniuses to achieve the only major title he was missing, and on the other, a football prodigy, who was impressively seeking his second title.
See below all the details of this incredible match.
France x Argentina in the 2022 World Cup, the game of the century
This last final of the 2022 World Cup was one of the best matches in recent times, with six goals in total in the end.
The game had to go to penalties to decide the winner.
The final score was Argentina 3 (4) x (2) 3 France.
A blue and white beginning
Argentina started dominating the first half, always keeping possession of the ball and attacking France through the middle.
One of the greatest strengths of the Argentines in this first stage was Di Maria playing on the switched side, that is, he plays as a right winger, but in this final, he played on the left.
This change made by Argentina's coach seemed to catch France off guard.
Since the player was left-handed and played on the right, therefore, logically, Di Maria would try to reach the area and attempt the shot.
However, with this change, the player was playing on the left, and raining crosses into the France area.
The First French Stumble
Precisely the player who was unbalanced in the game, Di María, makes a beautiful move on the left, pretending that he was going to cross into the area and leaving the marker in the lurch.
In an attempt to recover, Dembele ends up bringing down the attacker in the area and the referee awards a penalty.
Then, the captain and number 10, Messi, went for the penalty, and hit the corner hard with no chance for the goalkeeper.
Messi didn't want to miss this World Cup for anything, as it would be his last participation.
Scaloneta takes action and calls France to tango
In a quick counterattack, Argentina carries out an engaging exchange of passes that leaves France lost in the game.
It all started with a ball played to Mac Allister, and in the quick exchange of passes involving Messi and Julian Álvarez, Dí María was in front of the goal to score the second.
The French revolution
The France coach made some changes before the end of the first half, and a few more at the beginning of the second that had an effect and helped the team react.
The entry of Thuram and Muani gave the French team more speed in the first half, but it was still not enough to react.
However, when Coman and Camavinga entered the game, France regained control of the game, and managed to keep more of the ball.
The game, which was underway, had a twist with 10 minutes to go, and she had a first and last name, Kylian Mbappe.
Muani manages to overtake the defender well and is brought down in the area, and the referee gives a penalty, Mpappe takes the shot and manages to reduce the advantage. Leaving 2×1 on the scoreboard.
Right after the penalty, Messi tries to pass his opponent and loses the ball, with the defense in disarray, Argentina suffered a deadly counterattack.
Thuram set up a header for Mbappe to score a great volley, showing what he was coming for, the boy resolved the situation and left everything equal on the scoreboard.
With the tie persisting, the game went into dramatic extra time.
Messi here, Mbappe there
The game continued with both teams going all or nothing, one attacked and the other defended, when the ball was lost, the positions were reversed.
Great credit to the goalkeepers, who despite the goals conceded made great saves in extra time.
The first goal of extra time only came in the second half, and the one who arrived first was Messi again.
On a rebound from the goalkeeper, Messi was attentive and sent it into the back of the net.
After the goal, the Argentine team tried to use all trickery to gain time, but again Mbappe appeared to put France in the game.
When attempting a shot at the goal, the attacker kicked the ball into the hand of Montiel, Argentina's full-back, who was in the area and the referee awarded another penalty in favor of France.
And again France's number 10 hit and scored, leading to penalties.
Last line
And this last World Cup final couldn't end any differently, with excitement until the last minute.
Mbappe started hitting for France and Messi, for Argentina, both converted.
After that, Argentina converted all the following kicks, but, to the French's sadness, Coman and Tchouaméni were wasted.
Thus, giving the long-awaited World Cup title to Messi, who now joined the shelf of the best, alongside Pelé and Maradona.
