Ecuador x Senegal
Overview:
The first two games of the day were marked by direct competition for places, meaning whoever won the duel would qualify for the knockout stage.
Ecuador and Senegal played a very competitive match, but in the end, the Senegalese managed to win, even without Sadio Mané.
First time
Ecuador was completely dominated in the first half, after all, the Senegalese had all the best chances in this stage.
The first chances of the game came from Gueye after two minutes, and with B.Dia at 7 minutes, where both shot from inside the penalty area, but sent it out.
After incessant attempts by Senegal, Ismaïla Sarr invaded the area and conceded the penalty, which he himself took, opening the score.
After Sadio Mané, Ismaïla Sarr is the biggest name in this team. The player has been taking responsibility for himself in a very important way for his team.
Second time
In the second half, Ecuador returned a little more offensive. The team had its first shot at goal in the 66th minute, however, Senegal continued to dictate the pace of the game.
The Ecuadorians' goal came from a corner, when Caicedo sent the ball into the goal after the ball went past everyone.
Ecuador's joy was short-lived, after all, from a dead ball in the area, Koulibaly scored the goal and put Senegal back in front.
Situation of the teams in their groups:
The game ended with a victory for the Senegalese, and Ecuador presenting a game well below expectations. As the game was a direct confrontation for the 2nd place, consequently, Senegal qualified and the Latin Americans are out of the World Cup.
Netherlands vs Qatar
Overview
As Senegal would face Ecuador, the Netherlands entered the field practically classified. Even so, the team still demonstrated some of the problems it had already presented in previous games.
First time
The game started slowly, with both teams unable to create much.
The Qatar team, like Ecuador, was unable to pose a threat to the opposing team.
The first opportunity of the game belonged to the Netherlands, who scored the goal with Gakpo on the first chance they had.
Second time
Holland's dominance continued in the second half and, in the 48th minute, De Jong scored from the rebound of a Depay shot.
Situation of the teams in their groups:
Holland was the first team officially classified, however, it leaves a warning, as if it had been in a more difficult group, it might have been left out. The team must organize itself better for the knockout stages to have a chance of progressing to the next stage.
Qatar says goodbye to the competition without any victory, however, this was already expected, since the team participated as the host.
Iran x United States
Overview
Another game where the teams competed directly for the spot. The duel was very competitive, and in the end the United States qualified.
First time
The teams faced each other in a very frank confrontation, with both going on the attack.
The United States arrived well, with good headers clearing the opponent's goal. However, the goal came from a thrown ball, where Dest headed the ball for Pulisic to score the only goal of the game.
Iran's best chance in the first half was a deep throw to Taremi, but he was isolated and ended up making the wrong touch inside the North Americans' area.
The United States scored another goal, but the player was offside.
Second time
Iran came stronger in the attack in the second half, having several chances, most of them headed, but they were unable to convert any of them.
The best chance came in stoppage time, after a free kick. The ball was placed in the area, where Iran's top scorer received a header, but his shot hit the goalkeeper, and when it was heading towards the goal, the defender managed to stop it.
Situation of the teams in their groups:
Despite the rivalry outside the football fields, involving geopolitical issues, the atmosphere established between players and fans was friendly. The game ended with the sad elimination of Iran, and with the Americans classified.
Wales v England
Overview
The game started with a protest from the Wales team, as in the last two games. Players protest against racism, and even more so in this competition, as athletes were banned from wearing the “One Love” armband in support of the LGBTQIA+ cause.
England, already classified, was playing to meet the table, however, Wales was playing for a very specific combination of results to get through to the next stage.
First time
Wales adopted the strategy of letting England attack and counterattacking.
They managed to hold on in the first half, but in the second the English managed to score.
Wales were unable to reach the British goal in the first half, but England managed to score thanks to good saves from goalkeeper Danny Ward.
Second time
In the second half, England was even more dominant, as Wales' players were becoming worn out after closing in on defense.
The first goal came right after the return. Rashford scored with a spectacular free kick, and the Wales goalkeeper, who was taking everything, couldn't reach it. Thus, the scoreboard was opened.
At this stage, Wales had some chances to score, but goalkeeper Pickford was having an inspired day and didn't miss anything.
The main chance came from a deflected shot from Kieffer Moore, which narrowly missed.
England's other goals came with Phil Foden, with a low shot after Kane's cross, and with Rashford again, after a beautiful individual play.
Situation of the teams in their groups:
The result was already expected, Wales expected a miracle, but ended up giving the logic.
The English come first in the group and are one of the main favorites for the title.
